STS students were able to raise $3,016 for The Coral Reef Alliance during this year's Walkathon in May. The Coral Reef Alliance provides education and tools to local communities around the world to help them realize the value of their coral reefs, inspiring them to be their reef's most passionate stewards. Each year, STS students research different organizations that they identify as possible recipients for 10% of proceeds raised during Walkathon. Their process in reaching a decision is to ask questions to fully understand what the organization does, what is needed, how the money would be spent, and to share the information gathered, debate the merits of each organization, and narrow their list to 4 choices. Then, they create a PowerPoint presentation, write a speech, and do further research in order to become the expert on that organization. They plan how to run the “election”, then prepare any materials needed for the collection of votes, and present their PowerPoint presentations to the student body. This year, they were excited to vote The Coral Reef Alliance as their organization of choice!
