Celebrating Sportsmanship: The Falcon Award
Last Friday, we recognized the fall athletics season with our students during all-school Chapel. This season has been nothing short of amazing. We had 125 students participating across five teams, each celebrating team and individual victories, overcoming challenges, and growing both on and off the field. Whether on the field, the court, the course, or in the classroom, our athletes have shown remarkable dedication and spirit.
STS is a place that values both innovation and tradition, and we are thrilled to introduce a new tradition: the Falcon Award. Each season, we will recognize student-athletes from each team who exemplify the virtues of the Falcon Award. The STS mascot, the falcon, is known for its keen vision, agility, and noble presence—qualities that perfectly align with the ideals of sportsmanship.
The Falcon Award symbolizes the following traits:
- Keen Vision: Just as falcons have sharp eyesight, a good sportsperson sees the bigger picture, understanding the importance of fair play and respect.
- Agility: Falcons are agile and swift, much like how athletes need to be quick and adaptable in their sports.
- Noble Presence: Falcons are often seen as noble and majestic creatures, reflecting the dignity and integrity that sportsmanship embodies.
By naming the award after the falcon, we remind our students to strive for these qualities both on and off the field. It encourages them to be observant, adaptable, and to carry themselves with honor and respect in all their endeavors.
The Falcon Award also highlights our core virtues. These virtues are essential not only for athletic success but also for personal development and character building:
- Gratitude: Recognizing and appreciating the efforts of teammates, coaches, and opponents.
- Tolerance: Embracing diversity and showing understanding towards others’ perspectives and backgrounds.
- Respect: Valuing the rules of the game, the decisions of officials, and the contributions of all participants.
- Courage: Facing challenges head-on and persevering through difficult situations.
- Integrity: Upholding honesty and fairness in all actions, both on and off the field.
- Responsibility: Taking ownership of one’s actions and their impact on the team and the game.
- Compassion: Showing kindness and support to others, especially in times of need.
- Perseverance: Demonstrating determination and resilience in the pursuit of goals.
- Generosity: Sharing time, effort, and resources to help others succeed.
By integrating these core virtues, the Falcon Award not only celebrates athletic excellence but also promotes the development of well-rounded student-athletes who embody these values in all aspects of their lives.
