Mathematics

“Knowing mathematics means being able to use it in purposeful ways. To learn mathematics, students must be engaged in exploring, conjecturing, and thinking rather than only in rote learning of rules and procedures.”
- National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics

Our Vision

The vision of mathematics is to inspire, empower, and challenge our students as they become creative, critical, and reflective mathematicians. We teach mathematics in such a way as to develop dynamic mathematicians who feel mathematically secure, use numbers with confidence, understand mathematical principles, and are able to apply their knowledge in challenging problem solving situations with independence.

In our search for excellence within our classrooms, high expectations and rich opportunities are offered to all students. Instructional programs are designed to be highly engaging and challenging to students, with a focus on personalizing learning experiences as much as possible. Our goal is that students see the importance of mathematical study in their own lives as they move on to high school and college and beyond. We strive to offer a program of high standards for all learners by gearing our programs, resources, and groupings to a variety of learning styles and needs. We help students experience math at a pace that allows for continual personal growth and challenge. There are times when the whole class is engaged in a learning moment as a class, there are times when small groups explore and experiment on their own in collaborative endeavors, and there are times when students wrestle with discovery independently.

We seize all opportunities to enrich the world of mathematics by forging relevant links to STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
