STS Welcomes New
Food Service Director

STS is excited to welcome its new food service director, Rebecca Brendel. Having grown up in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago and fostered a passion for cooking early on, she pursued a formal education in the culinary arts and honed her skills at various distinguished restaurants in Chicago, Montana, and Seattle. Rebecca joined SAGE Dining Services® in 2020, serving as executive chef at The Bush School before transitioning to food service director at STS. Her deep appreciation for nature and her commitment to culinary excellence are qualities that she brings to her role at St. Thomas School. Rebecca will be leading the SAGE Dining team beginning with STS summer camps and is excited to meet the whole community at the start of next school year.

Dining FAQ

ARE SNACKS PROVIDED?

Snacks are provided for Early Learning Center students and at Extended Day. Elementary and Middle School students should bring their own snacks.

WHY A DINING PROGRAM?

Simply put, nutritious foods keep kids healthy and build better brains. We have a responsibility to provide well-balanced, delicious meals that meet your child’s nutritional needs, and to teach and reinforce healthy habits wherever we can. We see our Dining Program as an opportunity to create a “dining experience” that is more than “just” lunch. It is a chance for students and teachers to talk and share, to encourage healthy choices, and increase awareness of environmental stewardship. It is a foundation for a lifetime of nutritious eating, sustainable living, and community building.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

STS partners with SAGE Dining Services to create a dining experience. Meals are cooked in our kitchen from scratch with fresh, raw, wholesome ingredients by a team of SAGE chefs. Robust safety protocols, detailed menus, and a wide variety of items ensure a healthy, delicious meal for every student regardless of allergies or dietary restrictions.

WHO IS INCLUDED? CAN I OPT OUT?

Lunch is provided for all students in grades K-8, as well as ELC Enrichment students. Because we are committed to using high quality, fresh ingredients and seek to integrate the dining program with our curriculum, you cannot opt out.

WHAT IF MY CHILD HAS ALLERGIES?

SAGE Dining has robust protocols to manage allergies. Because their recipes are completely nut free, many allergens are eliminated from the onset. Anyone with a food allergy or restriction can speak with the SAGE team so they can address your specific need or concern. Menus are prepared in advance and

SAGE’s registered dietitians maintain an online allergen filter with information on all menu items.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT SAGE DINING SERVICES?

SAGE provides dining service at nearly 250 schools including several of the country’s top independent schools. For over 25 years, their focus has been on fresh, nutritious food, prepared from scratch.

WHAT IS THE COST AND HOW DOES BILLING WORK?

St. Thomas School features all-inclusive tuition so there is no additional cost for the dining program.

WILL FINANCIAL AID BE PROVIDED FOR THE DINING PROGRAM?

Like computers, textbooks, and student costs for field trips, the dining program is covered by our all-inclusive tuition, and therefore, included in financial aid.
